Rehab, Day 6
Hello again, everybody!
Maria has continued to do outstandingly well in rehab since my last posting. She started walking with a cane over the weekend, and today walked 45 minutes straight, with her physical therapist walking with her but not holding her up at all. She is still in a great deal of pain, but they are in the process of adjusting her neck brace and turtle (back brace) so that they fit together better - right now the neck brace has a front and a back and the turtle has a front and a back; what they want to do is attach the two front pieces and two back pieces so that they are always lined up correctly and thus are more comfortable (two pieces instead of four). She also had a cognitive test today, and did very well on it as well.
Not surprisingly, Ree is making friends with all of her doctors, nurses, and therapists. She had a lot of visitors this weekend, including Grandma and Grandpa Padden, who were very happy to finally see her, and lots of aunts and uncles and cousins. Katherine also made a trip over from Missoula, and she and her parents were able to spend a lot of time visiting.
It sounds like the food issue is going better. . . Barbara is getting very creative about things that can go in a blender - i.e. salmon (in mashed potatoes) and peach cobbler - yummy!
The rehab team will do another assessment on Wednesday, after which we will know more about what is coming up, and when Maria will be able to go home. . . no rush, as she is in the number one rehab facility in the US!
She continues to enjoy reading all of the notes and blog comments people are sending, and I'm told her room looks gorgeous with all of the flowers people have sent - so thank you!

45 minutes?!?! Maria, you're out of control. I'm really curious to hear how the salmon mashed potato mixture went, i'm hoping well... and remember you can always try rizotto (sp?) My dad and i found a place in the hospital that i think you should go to, it's called the healing garden, we found it on our way out yesterday. It's on the third floor and down the hallway with all the eye pictures. I think you would love it, it's very pretty and relaxing. Keep the good news coming sister, talk to you soon!
love you with everything

Maria fo fia! I am so dumb at computers I might have just figured out how to publish a comment! I am soooooo excited to go and finally see you tomorrow! Even when you are sick in the hospital, you are still cracking us all up. You are the greatest, brightest, most wonderful girl in the world and don't you forget it. Please tell the MG if we can do anything for you or bring anything to you, ANYTIME. We love you so, so much darling. Keep fighting.

Leah

Hey rod, I can't wait to see you this weekend. We have much to catch up on...a lot of CYO drama happening. I will fill you in on everything (at least everything Anna hasn't already told you). Keep up the good work. Love ya! Madge
i love you... its so funny, cause everytime one of my friends, from home will ask how your doing, ill just go on and on about you and how fast your recovering and how thats completly normal of you because your so determined and persistant when you want and need something and ill just start telling story after story about you and about us... after awhile when i realize ive been talking nonstop for like 30 mins... im like 'woah sorry im still going on and on' but everyone of them say 'no way. i love to hear about this!' and for those who have never met you ...'she seems like such a cool person' ... and i say... 'the coolest i know'
i love you. let me know when i can come see you in seattle...
im thinkin about you everyday.
Maria,
I am here at Midwest slaving away and thinking of you. I still am shaking my head in amazement over your ability to walk 45 minutes with the cane, make a pb and J sandwich,(which Ellen thought was cruel since you couldn't eat it)and keep all your visitors entertained. So when I feel a little overwhelmed taking G-ma, her friends, Noreen and Florence, and Aunt Jary to lunch I think of you and know this is a breeze. Tom, Ellen Mar and I will be up there on Sat or Sun and will stop in briefly to see you again. Tom and Ellie are most excited-Mar has a new game to bring up called"Date Marry or Dump"-should be entertaining. Love you-Keep up the good work.

date marry or dump huh? maria, you should be an expert... the game sounds oddly familiar ;)I just tried to call you but you are in OCT... or one of them... but anyway, i'll get ahold of you eventually. Hang in there, i love you!

love you lots,
Clare
hey maria! way to go girl! i'm so proud of you. whew. oh golly, i don't know what i'm doing on blogspot, but this is the only way to leave comments, so i guess i'm a blogger now. anyway, emily and i are in cave creek, arizona right now and boy do we ever think about you and your lovely family all the time. your parents are real swell. we seem to have a few unscheduled weeks coming up this fall, and i've never been to Washington state, so maybe i could just swing by or something to say hey...if it's cool with you of course. well, love to ya!

Maria, I'm so proud of you! Look at how far you've come! You're going to be out of there in no time!
I was listening to Sheryl Crow the other day and heard 'Strong Enough' and remembered us singing karaoke out in Greenport....it made me miss you even more! I am so excited everytime I read about how fast you're recovering - you are a true Warrior Queen! :) I laughed when I heard you were eating liquidized salmon and mash and peach cobbler - that's exactely what my Mum fed me when I was a baby: no tins of baby food for me, just whatever she was eating for dinner! Apparantly I loved it....hope you're loving it too....
Sending you all my love and prayers: my daily prayer is that you feel no pain and know only the love of your family and friends.
Peace, my dear,
Brigitte xx
Maria, you do not know me but I have worked with both Carly and Abby, most recently Carly who told me about your accident. I got on the blog site today and read about your recovery. You are truly an amazing person. I just wanted to send my hopes and prayers to you for a successful recovery. Carly and Abby are such great people that I am sure being related to them you are equally as good a person. It appears from everything people have written about you that you are full of life and that will carry you through to a recovery that appears to be unbelievable. Take care, Debbi Yates
