Happy Labor Day, Everybody!
On the two-week anniversary of her accident, Maria has been laboring (get it?)to get herself in airplane-ready shape for her trip back to Seattle later this week (exact date TBD, but it's looking like as early as Wednesday). Last night they took her off of her feeding tubes, so she has been getting all of her nutrition out of a squeegee/rubber straw-type contraption. . . lots of apple juice, potato soup, soy milkshakes, liquid diets are no fun for lactose intolerant people with acid reflux!! This morning they took her off of her last IV, the antibiotics, so she can now walk/wheel around with no tubes rolling along behind her.
Her nurse also took the last of her stitches out this morning, so she is making lots and lots of progress! Katherine left this morning, which was a bummer, but she was a great visitor and cheerleader for Ree (and chef for the rest of us). This afternoon, Barb, Char, and I helped Maria wash her hair and get all of the sticky residue off of her arms from where the IVs had been taped down. When I left to run over to kinkos to post this, they were trying to get her comfortable so that she could go to bed for the night - a difficult task as it really hurts her to move since they have taken her off of the morphine (despite her attempts to convince her nurse otherwise) and she now has to take what I'm told is a very nasty medication orally. Adding insult to injury, she only gets to take it every four hours (the morphine was every two) so she is definitely still in a lot of pain.
We had a visit from Jesse, one of our favorite ICU nurses, tonight - one of the highlights of the day! Maria is looking forward to coming home and seeing everyone. . . hopefully in a couple of days! Stage two of her journey (being in Billings, stage one was being in the ICU)is coming to an end. . . thanks to everyone for their continued love and support!
PS - in case anyone was planning on mailing anything to Billings tomorrow, DON'T!!! If you already sent something, don't worry, we've asked the hotel to forward it on, but from now on, please send things to Maria's parents home address. . . or her address at the hospital in Seattle, I'll post it when I know it. Thanks!

I'm thrilled that you're going back to Seattle soon - there's nothing like going home when you need to heal. The morphine thing sucks - I hope the new yucky medication isn't too bad! I'm wondering if you can make mushy cookie dough and eat that....I'll work on it :)
Masses of love,

Ree- so glad to hear your on your way back to Seattle! I heard you may be rehabing it up at UW- which is literally down the street from me! YAY! Get ready to do some serious hanging out.
Just a random lurker here, via QueSeraSera. My mother was in a similar accident in February, though her accident resulted in a few more serious injuries (broken neck and pelvis, luckily not paralyzed). It is amazing what the kindness of friends, family, and strangers can do to lift everyones spirits.
Maria, you are a lucky woman. Here's to an expedient recovery!
Chris
Oh this is great news, Maria. UW rehab is great, if that is where you end up. Just having you anywhere in the Seattle area is fabulous. Everyone can come and hangout with you.
You are loved big time,
BL & Dutch
Yay Maria...we will all get to be with you soo soon! Keep on pushing through, and lets get you back here!!! I cannot wait to see you!
Bunches and bunches of love!

I'm so proud of you. I hope you liked the letter of insperations i left behind. Leaving was really hard, but good news, i was able to get an extremely cheap ticket into seattle this weekend so i'll see you saturday and sunday too. I love you little one. Hang in there and promise me you'll keep getting better. I love you.

Hello beautiful!
I am sure that you look gorgeous with your hair just washed and without all those tubes...think about the starbucks' chai tea with milk and spices while you have that horrible medicine, ok?
Today was the first day of classes for us and I missed you terribly. We had the studio with Maria Porter -for three hours!- and the Shakespeare and Performance with a really nice guy called Rick. I guess Conte is not going to come back.
Anyways, I felt you were there all the time, or at least your energy was there.
I love you and I hope we can talk soon.

Hola Maria!
So I just heard about this blog and here I am. (Thank God for technology) When I first heard about your accident I was shocked and saddened to say the least. But I know if anyone can get through this it's you. Your positivism, your smile and all that energy you carry in that little body of yours will get you through this I just know it. I'm glad you get to go home soon, that will just make the recovery even faster which works for me cuz' the faster u get better the faster we get you back in NY. Take it day by day and you'll be back jumping around campus in no time. I guess the film and theater world will just have to hold on a little longer until you come back to free us from mediocrity. Keep the faith and that big smile on your face. See you soon!
Lots of love and happy thoughts,
