Friday, September 1st
Happy Friday Everybody! Today marks the 10th day following Maria's accident, and she has made incredible progress. When I first saw her last Thursday night, I could not have imagined that she would be where she is today - walking (quite a few steps, with a walker), talking (very clear sentences), and drinking (water and juice). This morning Maria had physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy, all of which went very well. She took the swallowing test again, and passed this time, which is why she is able to drink now. We went to buy her some nectar-style juice from the natural foods store, as the nurses told us that it is better for her to have thicker liquids, so that it is easier for her to control swallowing. We also got her some soy milk, yogurt, ice cream, etc, so that we can attempt to make her a milkshake tomorrow (she has requested a banana soy milkshake - yummy!).
Barb and Jesse (one of our very favorite nurses, a total doll) took Maria on a little walk around the hospital, and outside around the fountain where Dave, Albee, Auntie Char and I were sitting. . . we were supposed to be a surprise for Ree, but she didn't appear all that excited to see us:) She definitely wanted to go on the walk - it seems as though she likes to have activities scheduled throughout the day - but it is still very exhausting for her to sit up for very long. After chatting for a few minutes, she asked to go back inside and take a nap.
Also this afternoon Albee and I watched the rerun of last night's VMAs (MTV video music awards, for those of you who are not familiar) with Maria, and showed her how J-Lo was wearing a headscarf - we are thinking that it will possibly be a new trend, and Ree will be right in style wearing her scarves while her hair grows back. . .
Tonight during the shift change (hour and a half when ICU patients can't have visitors), Barb, Dave, Albee, Char and I are going to dinner at a very nice restaurant here in Billings, due to a generous gift certificate from the Padden/Dalbottens' Hanna Park Road neighbors - SUCH a thoughtful gift - to celebrate Dave and Albee's last night in Billings - they are off to Seattle and NYC, respectively, tomorrow. Katherine arrives from Missoula this evening as well, so Maria is excited to see her.
I think that's pretty much the update for now, I will try to keep you posted over the weekend, but I am losing my laptop when Alb leaves tomorrow. . . so it's back to Kinkos:( Keep rooting for Ree - our next hurdle is to get her out of ICU - hopefully by the next time you hear from me!
PS - Madge, sorry about the pics, I saw "mkay" and got a little confused. . . kind of like how I saw a picture of your dad playing a guitar and called it a piano. . . this is what sleep deprivation will do to you!

Maria, we are overjoyed to hear about the rate of your recovery. Monday night when I learned of the accident I was devatated. I just prayed and prayed that night, and prayed that your doctor's hands would be guided. You were also dedicated to many Saints. Since you've been constantly on my mind and in my prayers. My parents were out of town last weekend and I was going crazy not hearing how you were doing so I called Gaeann and a few days latter she told me about this site. It's been a God send. Thanks so much Carly and Sarah. Maria I have to say Wednesday when I got on the site was the first time I had heard you were awake and communicating, and showing you personality, I just sat and read with tears running down my face. You are amazing. We are very proud of you. My mom said when talking to your Dad he said you have so many attributes that most people in a situation like this have to muster up. He is so right. You've always been so positive and strong. Your recovery is an inspiration to see. Love you. We will keep praying. Many in Mike's family are praying for you also.

Hi Maria. It sounds like you are doing pretty well, which makes me feel alot better. i was going to send you a huge, out of control flower display with a spruce tree in the middle, but i guess they don't want people to do that. i imagine your room would look like a jungle by now if they did. i've been keeping you and your family in my prayers. keep up all the hard work and whatnot. i'll come see you soon, either in montana or seattle. -patrick
Maria, Our darling song bird. My oh my how you amaze all of us with your recovery skills. The Sheils family all have you in our prayers. We can all see you singing and dancing very soon. Hear comes the hard part, listen to the doctors!!!! Get out of the ICU we want to send you some pretty flowers. Love theSheils Family
Hello Butterfly! Today I found out this site. Albee and Dough have been telling me about how you were doing, but now I can see what your family is posting in the internet and that is great. I just wrote you a long postcard and I really do not want to repeat myself, but I want to tell you that I have faith in you. You can do anything that you have in mind. You are very stubborn and you always get it your way and you know it. Now you should be even ten times stronger. This is not going to be easy. You need to BE PATIENT!!! P-A-T-I-E-N-T You really do. You are going to get frustrated many many times. I can't even imagine what are you going through. Your priority is to recover. And that is the only thing you should be thinking.
I love you more than you will never know. YOU ARE IN MY MIND EVERY MINUTE OF THE DAY. Remember that I am here. Waiting for you.
Love and thousands of hughs for the best girl,
Amparo

My Strong, Beautiful, Magical, Irreplaceable Best Friend Maria,
I have been finding lots of random little gifts in lots of random places that I have been collecting for you. Your one of the few people who would ever enjoy them...

and I Love You.

Dear Maria
I think I may have figured out how to do this blog thing. Lauren just walked me through it.. I am so glad to hear you ae out of ICU. your progress is so amazing. I think about you so often as I know many others do, maybe all of our positive thoughts and prayers are helping you to move forward. I watched a Judy Garland special on PBS the other night and all the while thought how you would have enjoyed seeing it. You have chosen a very challenging career path, the inner strength required to do what you is probably serving you well at this time. I hear you may be coming to Seattle soon, I can not wait to hug you!! As you know, I am now childless for the first time in 22 years. During your recovery in Edmonds maybe you could come and "hang on the couch" (or do) something) with moi? Thank-you and kudos to Carly for this blog site. I cherish each posting...for those of us not there it helps to keep us present without having to persist with phonecalls. I am going to Camano today for a Family get together. You will be talked about, everyone is always anxious to hear of your progress. Much love to you and your family,Gwen
Up on a Walker! You go girl. Hey guys, is Carly's number still going to be the main contact cell number in MT?
Don't worry, Reecie, we will call your Dad and make sure he's doing OK, back in Edmonds.
Ron we would love to have a chat with you, too, so we'll call the hotel later today(Sunday).
Everybody, keep up the good work, because it is all helping. From your true grit, Maria to the message from the unknown blogger, you are healing.
Love is the key and that is one thing you have tons of.

Hey bird! Julie and I love you so much! You are amazing! keep up the good work!

Hey Everyone!
This is Katherine. I'm just writing to give everyone a little update because Maria has had a very big past couple days and it had been tough to find a computer to do updates on. Maria becomes more and more concious every hour. She definitly has her classic sense of humor and fighting spirit. She was up and walking today and walked twice as far as yesterday!! Yesterday she was moved from ICU to a regular room so now we can all be in there at once (which is very nice) and we can finally decorate her room with flowers and cards! It is looking like she might be able to come home sometime this coming week, which is amazing.
Katherine
