After a month in the hospital (Billings for two weeks and then UW Medical Center), she is currently recovering at her parents' home in Edmonds, WA. Monday, August 28th

Hi Team,

So today has been a rough day for Maria. Since she woke up and was so aware last night, we decided to have someone in her room the whole night with her in case she woke up again. Barb and Dave stayed until 10:30, at which point Albee and I relieved them so that they could attempt to get a good night's sleep. Willem traded off with Alb and I until about 2:00 am, at which point he went home and Alb and I stayed with Ree until 5. She slept for most of the night, but was awake for short periods of time a few times and wrote us a couple notes ("I want to breathe and take a nap"). We helped the nurse give her a bath, and when the nurse looked at her legs she remarked that she won't have any problems in terms of rehab for her muscles, etc. She also said that when she saw the picture of Maria she thought, "Oh, this girl is so beautiful, and from New York," as if they wouldn't have anything in common, but then saw Ree's black, calloused feet and realized she is a "barefoot girl" and that they would have more in common than she thought. Anyhoo, Barb arrived at the hospital at 5 am to relieve us, followed closely by my mom (Marybeth) and Dave, while I took a nap and poor Albee had to do some work.

She was awake a lot this morning, very agitated and tired. They can manage her pain pretty well, but she is very uncomfortable. My mom left this morning, and when she said goodbye to Maria she said "I know you wish you could leave here, too," and Ree squeezed her hand and gave the thumbs up. She received a lot of mail today - Barb and Albee read it all to her and she loved to hear how everyone is thinking about her.

They moved Maria into a normal bed around noon, which is great because she is not constantly in motion. She is in the neck brace and a "turtle" (body cast/back brace sort of thing) so that she is pretty immobile and her neck fracture can heal, but she's not strapped down anymore. However, around 4 pm they diagnosed her with pneumonia - she has a fever, and the docs are doing a lot of tests (blood, urine, lungs, etc) to find out if she has any other infections which are causing the fever, or if it is just the pneumonia. She remains on the vent, but is capable of breathing on her own - they just want to wait to extubate (sp?) her until the risk of infection has gone down. Once she's off the vent, they can move her out of ICU, so long as everything else is going OK.

Anyway, that's about all the news from Billings today - we have made friends with another ICU family, there is a 24-year-old girl who is a noncompliant diabetic who almost died yesterday, and she has two sisters who are pretty sad and quiet, but they each have husbands and little babies that we've been talking to - Maddox (9 months) and Talia (7 months) - they are pretty cute, and the dads are pulling for Maria just like we are for their sister-in-law.

Last thing - an anonymous benefactor wants to buy Maria a present - he was thinking an iPod but then wondered if she would prefer a hand-held DVD player instead. Albee wants me to make a poll - but I can't figure out how - so if anyone has an opinion please feel free to post it (and if your vote is for the iPod, please specify nano or video).

Thanks again, everyone, for all of your thoughts and prayers! Keep them coming - now that she is awake, she is going to need a lot of strength and patience in the coming days!

Carly, Maria has spoken to me many a time about how badly she wants an ipod... but now that she's stuck in bed maybe her mind has changed... but i know that before the accident that's what she would have wanted

I am glad to hear you are doing so well with the recovery, Kat has been updating me daily. Hopefully they are supplying you with enough pairs of fresh new socks and playing Mariah's Carey's Christmas song for you becuase I think that would make your stay a little more enjoyable.

Keep up the speedy recovery and I hope to get a chance to see you soon,

We're sooooo very glad you're out of that rotating bed. (I just HATE those.)
You have been through so much and I'm sure there are times you want to scream, but can't because you're jaw's wired shut! (I hate that too.) But when you are able to, I want to be there to hear it!
Swede hasn't written anything to you that I know of, but let me tell you -- that guy has been worried sick about you. It devasted him -- and all of us. We're just so glad that you're doing so much better.
Tell that pneumonia bug to get out of your lungs! Not having it slow down your healing.
Love to you and your folks and that cutest sister & brother of yours!
Sal (& Swede)

RISA!! bummer about the fever but props on getting moved. it's the first of many steps in the recovery. I vote IPod for a few reasons 1)you can put videos on it, 2)Maria will love dancing around to it when she's out of the hospital. Way to go Ree. I know you'll be back in action for thanksgiving.

Dear Maria,
I'm sure you have no idea who I am, but we met several times when you were very young and you left a big impression on my wife, Debbie, and me. You and your folks and Albee (Willem wasn't even born yet!) met us and our kids (Rem, Nique and Annelise) at the Tacoma Zoo.

You were closest in age to Nique---who, like you is sandwiched between an older and a younger sibling---and you were also closest in spirit to her as well. That is to say, you both were like two untamed young horses that simply love to run! And run and run and run!!

What we admired about you then--- and what we're sure is going to pull you through all this---was your spirit, your spunk, and your incredible willpower.

So, although your body may be confined to bed for a bit, I know your mind and your heart are still galloping across fields and jumping fences whenever they appear.

We look forward to seeing you again when the rest of your body catches up.

love and all good wishes to you and your family,
Bob Haft and Debbie Fausti

We think of all of you nonstop day and night and know that things are still instense. We are SO happy though that all the "big" things have gone so well.
Maria, you WILL get through this even though it STINKS! As everyone has written, you being stuck in bed is not the Maria way... This will not be forever. You will have your old life back. I just hope Grandma still has her neon green pants for you to wear at Thanksgiving, because I don't know how, but I missed that one! Love and strength heading out to all of you. Thanks Carly. Love, Peg

I do not know you or Maria, but 9 months ago my girlfriend was in a terrible car accident. After two months in the hospital and months in rehab, she is finally driving again and enjoying everything she used to. ONe of the best presents she got while in the ICU was her handheld DVD player. We would cuddle up on her bed and watch movies and it provided welcome distraction from the pain of her injuries. I hope Maria recovers fully...she seems like such a joyful girl. Blessed Be.

Maria and family

I wanted to thank you for the wonderful card and tell you that I am grateful for the opportunity to have had the chance to meet you and your family and take care of you in the ICU. I worked nights with you but wished that I would have been able to take care of you in the days to have more time to interact with you since night time was mostly your sleeping time. I hope your hospital stay was great, and hope your recovery goes fast and well.

Carly- Good luck with everything (law stuff). Thanks for being so helpful and kind!!!

Barb and Dave- Thanks to you as well for your kindness!! I looked forward everyday to come in and see you and your family and help Maria get better!!

Albee- Thank you for your kindness, I enjoyed getting to know you and your family!!!
